![]() That project brought new gas supplies into lower Manhattan and helped the utility convert several thousand buildings from heating oil to natural gas, a move that was lauded for its clean-air and emissions-reduction benefits. As a utility spokesman explained, there is a “lot of natural gas around the country but getting it to New York has been the strain.” The last pipeline expansion in Con Ed’s service area was completed in 2013. Those constraints are largely due to New York State regulators, who have repeatedly delayed or denied the certifications needed to build new pipelines. Con Ed cited several reasons for the shortage, including “constraints on interstate pipelines that bring natural gas to customers in Westchester County.” ![]() The utility, which provides natural gas and power to customers in and around the city, explained that demand for gas has “been experiencing significant growth primarily due to the construction of new buildings, the opening of new businesses, and conversion of oil to cleaner-burning natural gas in existing buildings.” While demand is rising, however, there is a shortage of the fuel. Nevertheless, in March, Consolidated Edison (Con Ed) ceased providing new natural gas connections in most of its service area in Westchester County, which lies north of New York City ( Figure 1). Those pipelines are critical to the future of the state: natural gas generates about 46% of New York’s electricity and is used widely to heat homes and buildings. It is served by about 4,500 miles of natural gas transmission pipeline and about 87,000 miles of gas distribution and service lines. Today, New York is the sixth-largest gas-consuming state in the United States. That well led to the creation of the Fredonia Gas Light Company, the first natural gas distribution company in the country. In 1821, the first successful natural gas well in America was completed, in Fredonia, New York. In 2019, EIA expects domestic gas production to exceed 90 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). * Energy Information Administration (EIA), “Short-Term Energy Outlook,” Apr. This paper highlights the need for more natural gas supplies in the Northeast to heat homes, buildings, and generate electricity, and it explains how efforts to restrict those supplies are hurting consumers and the environment. New York and the New England states already have some of the highest residential gas and electricity rates in the country, and these rates will only rise as a result of the blockade. While these restrictions are claimed to be necessary to protect the environment from harm, they will likely result in increased use of heating fuel oil, which means increased air pollution and carbon-dioxide emissions. The shortages are due in large part to New York State regulators, who are refusing to allow the construction of new gas pipelines. natural gas production is soaring, up 91% since 2005-and the country is now exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) all over the world, including to China, Chile, and India.* Despite this surfeit, dozens of communities in New York and Massachusetts are subject to moratoriums on new gas connections due to shortages of the fuel.

Minnelli in her most famous role, as Sally Bowles in "Cabaret" Image: picture-alliance/kpa She never graduated from high school, but tentatively began to build a career, performing alongside her mother and visiting her father's film sets. She grew up in the Hollywood dream factory, surrounded by the glitzy world of American showbiz, frequently moving homes and changing schools. "My mother gave me my drive, but my father gave me my dreams," Minnelli has been quoted as saying. Her parents separated in 1951, and shared their daughter's upbringing in very different ways. That certainly doesn't sound like her family ties - which boosted the careers of many stars in show business - helped her at all.īorn Main Los Angeles, Liza May Minnelli is the daughter of actress Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli. Rumor has it that she unsuccessfully auditioned more than 20 times for "Cabaret" on Broadway before she was cast in the lead role for the movie. What looked like a dream career, however, was the result of plenty of hard work. Seemingly overnight, the saucy character Sally Bowles from Bob Fosse's 1972 Oscar-winning film musical "Cabaret" swept audiences off their feet - and won Liza Minnelli an Academy Award for her portrayal of the American cabaret performer. Really: ketchup is a very important ingredient if you want to keep things authentic. The magical sauce that goes on Korean fried chicken is a mixture of honey, brown sugar, gochujang, and ketchup. Remove and toss in sauce, then enjoy immediately. After the chicken has cooled, spray it with oil again, then air fry it for the final time at 400✯ for 5 minutes. When 15 minutes is up, flip the chicken and continue air frying for another 5 minutes. While the chicken is air frying, make the sauce by combining all the sauce ingredients, then heating it up to a very slight boil (or even just microwaving it for a minute). There’s no need to preheat the air fryer. I coated the chicken first with oil to help with heat transfer, then salt and pepper, then corn or potato starch, which is what Asian-style chicken is classically made with for a lighter, crispier outer shell. To make Korean fried chicken in an air fryer: It’s not totally necessary, but it really helps. The secret is to coat your chicken after the first fry using a spray/mist of oil. Double frying in the air fryer works just as well as it does with deep frying, but way easier. The secret of Korean fried chicken is the double frying. Steph suggested using the air fryer, which I thought was a genius idea, and I developed this double air fry technique that produced a pretty darn crispy chicken that I think rivals the best of the best deep fried versions while being way healthier. ![]() ![]() We’ve always loved the idea of making Korean fried chicken at home, but even with as much as we cook, deep frying is never fun, so we’ve never done it. We repeated the measurements a minimum of four times, taking an average of the four runs to get the tested throughput for each extender. (None of the extenders or routers used in the testing support the new WiFi 6 standard.) Using the website, we measured the signal strength-or throughput-of the routers at various distances, first using the 2.4GHz 802.11n (WiFi 4 standard) frequency band and then the 5GHz 802.11ac (WiFi 5) frequency band. If you place it too close to the router, you may not be able to push the signal to the desired location. If you place the extender much farther from the router, you risk losing more signal speed than necessary. They generally recommend plugging the unit into an outlet about halfway between the router and the area you hope to reach with the extended signal. ![]() To position the extenders properly, we followed the directions included with each model. Once the connection is complete, you can use the extender app to adjust the device settings to suit your needs. You simply push the WPS button on the router and minutes later on the extender, and the device gets linked to the WiFi network without making you type in a username and password. If your router supports WPS, too, we recommend going that route. In some cases, the apps even failed to set up the extender.Īll six models also support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), which allows you to link the device to your router with the push of a button. The first thing we learned is that the mobile apps designed to guide you through the setup process aren't as easy to use as the manufacturers would have you believe.Īll of the models except for one (the Linksys RE6300) supported this app-based setup, but our testers were often tripped up by the unclear directions. The larger place needed help getting a WiFi signal to the home office above the garage. The smaller house has an outdoor deck area with spotty WiFi. One house measures about 2,000 square feet and the other nearly 2,200 square feet. To answer that question, we put a half dozen models to work in two modest-sized homes owned by Consumer Reports testers. They often come in packs of three, too, which allows you to move the units around your home, creating widespread coverage. ![]() And that's in an ideal world, where the WiFi signal from the router hasn't been degraded by obstacles such as thick walls and large appliances.īy contrast, mesh routers use two different frequency bands, which limits the speed loss to roughly 10 percent. So, for example, if you're standing right next to your WiFi router (where the signal is strongest) and get 50 megabits per second (fast enough to stream two 4K Netflix videos at once), the speed in your extended network will be about 25 megabits per second. That extra step can reduce the speed of your WiFi signal by about half. "So now the data that originally would have come directly from the access point to your connected device is going through an intermediate step," Athreya says. That's in part because an extender relies on the same frequency band as the router itself. The extender can then pick up the WiFi signal from your router and push it deeper into your home.īut you're likely to notice a significant drop in throughput speeds in the "extended" network, says Kannan Athreya, an associate professor of computer science and engineering at Ohio State University. To get the best results, you have to plug the extender into a power outlet midway between your router and the dead-zone area. While it's tempting to think of a WiFi range extender as a device that can beam fast, reliable WiFi throughout your home, it's more like a spot fix for the dead zone in your bedroom or attic-turned-home office. ![]() This sloppiness contributed to my confusion throughout the book. (It is not hard to do simple research!) There were many instances like this, as well as blatant continuity errors, like one second the stadium seats 60k people, the next it seats 100k. There was a kid in my high school who ran a mile in four and half minutes. I am one of the most out of shape people I know, and I used to run a fourteen minute mile. I almost threw my phone across the room at how breathtakingly wrong this was. It’s not difficult to Google fast mile times, for example, but instead Sakavic has her NCAA COLLEGE ATHLETES inform the main character Neil that his “fourteen minute mile” means he is SUPER FAST. The text openly contradicts itself on many occasions, and also openly contradicts reality and facts. I’m going to bullet point the rest of this in an effort to sort out my thoughts: This didn’t need to be as toxic or confusing as Sakavic made it. Seeing where the book ended up, I can now see what Sakavic was going for, but I still think she utterly botched her execution. Actual stakes were now present, and the characters started behaving more like human beings. It wasn’t until the last 5% of the book that I became emotionally engaged with it. On top of that, I was confused as hell by the sloppy writing and continuity. ![]() It was unpleasant to be in these characters’ company, and they didn’t seem to like themselves much either. I didn’t like a single character, and actively hated many of them. ![]() Most of the time I was reading it, I was irritated and utterly flummoxed about why people loved this series. I read three novel length fanfics in the time I was supposed to be reading this book. I should have been able to kick it out in hours, in less than a day. This was a 262 page book that felt like 500. Look, I have a lot of thoughts, and many of them are confused, so bear with me. There is no romance in this book at all, but I can feel it coming on in the future. There is supposed to be an inherent conflict in the premise between Neil’s desire to play the sport he loves, which will bring him into the spotlight, and his desire to stay hidden and alive. He also happens to have been childhood friends with one of his teammates, and works very hard not to be recognized. The main character is the son of a crime lord and has been on the run for most of his life he is living under a fake identity when he’s recruited. It follows a team of college athletes playing a made-up sport called Exy at a fictional university called Palmetto State. It’s entirely self-published, and managed to break through somehow. If you’re not aware of this book, a while back this series started making the rounds on Tumblr. ![]() Pet ID Tag offers to its pet-lovers engraved pet tags and personalised pet tags so that you can give your furry friend a unique accessory. Of course our stainless, brass and plastic pet id tags can be engraved on 2 sides so that also gives you more scope to include more information and be creative! Please refer to our size guide for more information on the size of the tag that would be right for your pet! So if your pet is "a little one" you may either want to select a small tag, or a plastic tag. When considering the size of your tag, please bear in mind that the metal tags are heavier than the plastic tags. For a larger tag, you could include more details, such as adding an address and additional contact numbers such as your vet. So if you are ordering a small tag for your dog or cat, you may just include your name or your pet's name, and a contact phone number. It's important to consider the size of the tag, bearing in mind that the more text you include, the smaller the text will be (in order to fit on the tag). So if you think your pet would be a candidate for being stolen, maybe just put your name and contact details on the tag. The key is to make sure that anyone who finds your pet can find you, and/or your home quickly.īut here's an interesting thought - a client reminded us that if your pet's name is on the tag, it makes it easier for someone to steal your pet. Many owners like to include their pet's name, (and/or their name), plus address and phone number(s). You can get as creative as you like when it comes to the engraving on your pet tag. |
